2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition SWEEPSTAKES WINNER S3x |
Truly an incredible story visit http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/04/01/japan.autism/. Our winemaker, Matt Cline has been sourcing fruit and making wine in the U.S. for Coco Farm & Winery in Japan for the past 18 years. Matt introduced their current winemaker Bruce Gutlove to the family in 1991 and he has been in Japan ever since. Matt works with Bruce each year to determine what fruit from California will be selected for Coco program. Bruce sources fruit from several countries along with growing grapes at the vineyard in Japan.
Coco Farm and Winery is very unique in that a major portion of the staff is made up of developmentally disabled and autistic people. More than 100 developmentally disabled people work to create Coco Farm and Vineyard's wines. Most of them live full-time at the vineyard. The philosophy is that hard work will imporve their lives.
